Five Ways To Wear A Scrunchie

Five easy, elegant ways to wear a scrunchie, from the classic ponytail to plaits and buns.

Scrunchies are back, and we love it. A favourite in the 80s and 90s, the scrunchie is a lovely way to transform your hairstyle. We love matching a scrunchie to an outfit to tie the look together. They are perfect for a comfortable ponytail, but why stop there? Here are five ways to wear a scrunchie.

1. Ponytail

Of course, we have to start with the most popular way to wear a scrunchie: the classic ponytail. Whether it is a playful high ponytail or a sleek low ponytail, a scrunchie adds something special to your look. Try a texturising spray (or even dry shampoo) for an effortless, softer look, or a little gel or hairspray for a sleek finish.

2. Ponytail with a twist

Why stop at one scrunchie? For a statement twist on the classic ponytail, add a second. Put your hair in a half-up ponytail using your first scrunchie, then gather all of your hair into a low ponytail and secure it with your second. Fuller scrunchies make a statement, and two contrasting colours make the look even more vibrant.

3. Half-up

This simple style is a lovely way to keep hair out of your face if you like to wear most of it loose. Pull the top layers into a ponytail at the crown of your head, or go for a high top-knot bun for a playful 90s hairstyle. We find a slimmer scrunchie works best in most hair types, as it is holding a smaller amount of hair.

4. Plait

Decorate your plait with a scrunchie at the base or the end (or both). For a subtle look, choose a slimmer scrunchie; for more drama, choose a fuller one. If your scrunchie is a little too loose at the end, tie a basic hair elastic in place first and loop the scrunchie over the top to help it stay put.

5. Bun hairstyles

A scrunchie is a lovely way to decorate a bun, and it also keeps loose ends of hair neatly in place and hidden. Pop a large scrunchie around your ready-secured bun to decorate it, or secure your bun with a slimmer style.
