Chignon pins may look simple, but they can feel daunting if you have never used one. The good news is that with the right pin for your hair, an elegant updo takes only a minute. Here is how to choose your pin, and how to use it.
How to Do a Chignon With Medium Hair
For medium hair, a chignon pin is a lovely way to secure all of your hair in an updo:
- Gather your hair at the nape of your neck and twist.
- Bring the twist up so it lies flat against your head.
- Tuck the ends under and roll them gently into the pocket of hair beside the twist.
- Hold the pin upside down, so it curves away from your head, and push the prongs through the top layers of hair in the middle of the updo. Avoid placing it too low, or the top will be too heavy to hold.
- Flip the pin over and push it into the twist, so it follows the curve of your head.
How to Do an Updo for Fine Hair
Chignon pins work with every hair type, and they are a lovely way to secure fine hair in an updo. The method is the same as for medium hair above.
- For updos and half-up styles in long fine or medium hair: our 6x 9cm Chignon Hair Pins.
- For half-up buns: our handmade Medium Hair Pin, whose waved teeth give a firm grip.
What Is the Difference Between a Chignon Bun and a Twist?
A chignon bun is secured by pushing the pin through a few layers of hair on one side of the bun. It can hold all of your hair up or create a half-up style, and works well for both fine and thick hair.
A chignon twist, also known as a French pleat, involves twisting all of your hair up, folding it back on itself and securing it with a pin. For more help, read our guide on how to use chignon pins.
How Do You French Twist Curly Hair?
Follow the same five steps as for medium hair above. Curly hair needs a longer pin to wrap around all of your hair, such as our Long Filigree Hair Pin or Long Chignon Pin.
