The history of the claw clip, by TEGEN

Where Did The Claw Clip Originate From?

The story of the claw clip, from its invention in Oyonnax, France, to the much-loved accessory we wear today.

So many of us love the claw clip and couldn't imagine our daily hair styling without it. But have you ever wondered where it comes from?

Here is everything you need to know about the humble claw clip. Fashion trends are always changing, but the claw clip has remained a favourite.

Are Claw Clips Back in Style?

You might remember the claw clip from the late 1990s, and since then it has made a very welcome return. The versatility of claw clips is one of the reasons they were so popular in the '90s, so it is no surprise that they are back in style, and we cannot see them going anywhere soon.

Who Invented The Claw Clip?

Few people know who invented this clever accessory. Christian Potut came up with the idea of the claw clip in the late 1980s, and it suits all hair types and textures.

"One day I kept crossing and uncrossing my fingers," says Christian. "And that's when I had my lightbulb moment. I said to myself: 'I sell combs and clips, why don't I combine the two?'" By combining both, he created the hair claw we all recognise.

It was a great success, and the claw clip is still loved more than 30 years later.

Where Does The Claw Clip Come From?

The claw clip was born in Oyonnax, in the heart of France. Christian's company, CSP Diffusion, was founded in Oyonnax in 1986. The same town is home to our family-run French maker, who has been making hair clips since 1892 and has followed the trends ever since, including the claw clip. As a small hair accessory company, we take pride in knowing our French Handmade claw clips are made in the same town where the claw clip was invented.

France is often described as the birthplace of luxury. Some of the world's best-known fashion houses were born in France and continue to guide the fashion industry with craftsmanship admired around the world. France also has a long history of hair clip making, going back to 1630, when the King of France named Oyonnax, where our French Handmade clips are made, the exclusive supplier of hair clips to France. This is why we chose to have our French Handmade designs brought to life there, bringing a touch of something special, valuable and unique into the lives of our customers.
