Barrettes are a classic hair accessory that can add a touch of elegance to any style. Some people wonder whether barrettes can damage hair. The answer is not a simple yes or no, as it depends on a few factors.
One factor is the type of barrette you use. Some barrettes have sharp edges or harsh metal clasps that can snag or pull on hair, causing breakage or split ends. Wearing barrettes too tightly can also put stress on your hair over time. Our French Handmade barrettes are designed to be gentle on hair, with smooth, polished edges and strong steel clasps.
What are barrettes?
Barrettes are hair accessories used to hold hair in place. They come in different shapes, sizes and designs, and are often used to add a touch of style to a hairstyle.
Barrettes can hold hair in different ways, depending on the type of barrette and the hairstyle. Some common ways to wear barrettes include:
- Holding back your fringe or side pieces of hair
- Securing a ponytail or bun
- Adding a decorative touch to an updo or half-up style
How do barrettes work?
Barrettes work by clasping the hair, holding it in place and stopping it from falling or moving around. They can be used to create a variety of hairstyles, from simple ponytails to elegant updos.

Do barrettes damage hair?
Factors that can cause damage
- Tightness: barrettes that are too tight can cause breakage and damage the hair cuticle.
- Material: barrettes made of metal or plastic with sharp edges can snag and break hair.
How to prevent damage
- Choose the right size: select barrettes that are the right size for your hair, avoiding any that are too small or too large for your hair type. For thick hair, look for barrettes with a large space between the barrette and the clasp, so there is room to hold all of your hair. Our favourite barrettes for thick hair are the Wide Arched Barrette Clip and the Extra Large Barrette Clip, which has an exceptionally large space inside for a secure hold. For finer hair, smaller barrettes with less space between the clasp and the barrette work best, as they are less likely to slip out during the day. Our Small Barrette Clip and Mini Barrette Clip work beautifully in fine hair.
- Select the right material: choose barrettes made of materials that are gentle on hair. Our French Handmade barrettes are made from strong, plant-based cellulose acetate, polished for the smoothest edges so they are kind to your hair. Our steel clasps are strong and durable too.
- Avoid tightness: do not wear barrettes that feel too tight. If you feel any discomfort, loosen your style, although choosing the right barrette for your hair type should help avoid this.
- Remove carefully: take barrettes out gently to avoid pulling or tugging on your hair.
